The Washburn Rural boys soccer team won the 6A State Championship for the first time in twelve years on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025. The team battled for 110 minutes and eventually had to compete in a penalty shootout to determine the winner.
The score was tied 2-2 after regular time. The first goal was scored by Brodye Kocher-Munoz who headed the ball into the back of the net off of a corner from Brandon Hamilton. The Shawnee Mission East Lancers equalized in the second half and then took the lead with eight minutes left, making the score 2-1. Junior Myles Didde scored the goal that sent the game into overtime with five minutes left in regulation.
The overtime periods went scoreless with many amazing saves by goalie Miles Cook. He continued to make two saves in the penalty shootout that helped Rural win the game. They finally celebrated their win after four penalties were made by seniors Dylan Willingham, Brandon Hamilton, Brody Grogan, and Liam Morrison.
The state championship win finished Rural’s season off with a record of 19-1-1.
