On Tuesday March 19, 2024, the WRHS varsity girls soccer team played their first game against the De Soto Wildcats. The game took place at De Soto’s home field, located in De Soto, Kansas, at 6:30 Pm.
At kickoff, the two teams were evenly matched with possession, but with 18 minutes left in the first half, with an assist from junior captain Destiny Higgs, Kate Hink shot from the 18 feet and put the first goal on the board. Later, with about seven minutes left in the first half, the Wildcats scored a goal, making the score 1-1.
With one minute and two seconds left until halftime, senior captain Hayley Legg takes a corner kick. Junior, Delaney Hill, heads the ball into the goal, making the score 2-1 going into the second half.
Starting the second half, the WRHS lead was being challenged by the now rested Wildcats, and even though there were three yellow cards issued against WRHS players throughout the second half this did not stop the Lady Blues.
With 21 minutes and 15 seconds left until the final whistle, Erika Bovell scored the last goal of the game with an assist from sophomore Dayne Shriver. The game ended 3-1 with the Lady Blues coming out with a win.
