Towards the end of December, 2022, Dreamworks released Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, a sequel to Puss in Boots (2011). The film follows Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) trying to get the last wish from the wishing star, so he can get more lives after losing eight of his nine lives while Death (Wagner Morua) literally chases after him.

The movie forces Puss to team up with Perro (Harvey Gullien) and old ally Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) to get to the wish before Goldilocks (Florence Pugh), and Jack Horner (John Mulaney). The movie includes themes about found family, learning to appreciate life, humility, and facing your fears. This film’s animation is stellar and takes some inspiration Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is especially noticeable during fight scenes.

I loved the vocal performances in this film as well. Antonio Banderas is amazing as Puss, and I was especially surprised by John Mulaney’s performance as Jack Horner. The jokes in this movie are also pretty good. The clever jabs at fairytale tropes in this movie mirror the quality of similar jokes in other movies of the Shrek series. I don’t think any review can accurately describe how it feels to experience this movie. I would recommend you watch it either in theaters or digitally. I promise you won’t regret it.
