Off season track workouts start up

Monday, Jan.  9, the Washburn Rural High School track and field team started up their off season conditioning, which will run throughout January and February.

Coaches encourage athletes going out for track and field in the spring to condition after school three days a week in order to help prepare and prevent injuries in the season. Conditioning lasts about an hour after school on Monday’s, Tuesday’s, and Thursday’s.

Studies show that the most beneficial training gets done in the off-season in order to stay in shape and to improve future performance. Students who do not participate in a winter sport, and or winter runs, should do something to stay active before the season starts.

Coaches point to examples like going to the gym, conditioning with the group after school, running at home, and lifting weights. Also, the importance of a healthy diet for committed athletes consists of lots of protein, fish, vegetables, fruits and water.

Coaches also emphasize the hydration plays a key role in staying healthy and helping athletes reach their goals. For students interested and fully committed in taking on the responsibility of joining Washburn Rural’s track and field team, contact Coach Wetzel in the counseling office.
