On Feb. 27, the Young Democrats and Young Republicans had a debate in the auditorium. The topics covered were Presidential War Powers and The Trade War with China. The speakers for the Young Republicans were Aaron Schifman and Eli Friedli. For the Young Democrats, Grace Kessler and Petre Dimitriu spoke.

Senior Aaron Schifman gave the speech about Presidential War Powers and afterward was questioned by members of the Young Democrats. That was the structure of the debate; a speech then a questioning period. For the Democrats, Petre Dimitriu gave the War Powers speech. Specific points discussed were President Trump’s air strike on Iranian General Qasem Soleimani and the War Powers Resolution of 1973. The justification of the strike being mainly the attack of the U.S. embassy in Iraq just three days prior to the strike. Soleimani reportedly orchestrated the attack injuring 100 U.S. soldiers.

Junior Eli Friedli gave the speech for the Republicans on the Trade War with China, and Senior Grace Kessler gave the speech for the Democrats. Questioning for this topic was interesting, with the Republicans making a point that collected tariff money goes to funding food banks in the U.S. according to Pew Trusts, Arizona Central, and News Day. Another point made was that Coronavirus affected the Trade War setting up China to back down. This is true according to a New York Times article written by Carlos Tejada.
