GMOs are Beneficial
December 14, 2018
Humanity should continue to use GMOs because of their multitudinous advantages for the progression of the human race, most notably their sustainability and ability to end world hunger. GMOs have a high sustainability because they require fewer inputs to be successful. Genetically modified plants need fewer pesticides, herbicides, water, and land to grow healthily. Prior to the use of GMOs, a copious amount of pesticide was used to save crops from the detrimental and incessantly devouring from bugs. To combat this, scientists have begun to engineer plants to be infused with Bt genes, which are professionally known as Bacillus thuringiensis. These genes eradicate the necessity of pesticides, and is very successful at driving out and keeping away pests. Additionally, GM crops that are herbicide resistant conserve water because they reduce the need for tillage, which ultimately increases the health of the soil. Resources such as soil and water are necessary for continued farming, and, accordingly, a flourishing food supply. Lastly, GM crops require less land. Farmers can produce more because less damage occurs to the soil as a result of tillage. Partly, less land is required to farm because the plants do not have to compete with weeds and bugs, mostly because farmers do not have to add land to account for these losses. Essentially, the sustainability of GMOs is advantageous and establishes their necessity in agriculture.
Because GMOs are highly sustainable, they can be used to annihilate world hunger, specifically through productivity and vitamin enriched crops. According to a study done by Harvard, about 800 million people a year are not sufficiently fed. Consequently, scientists have recently developed crops with additional nutrients in an attempt to give more nutrients to people in poverty-stricken countries. These extra nutrients have already been added to crops like rice, corn, and soybeans. Also relevant, GMOs can be produced at a faster rate than conventional crops, which is successful because scientists enter genes that have a resistance to weeds and bugs. A faster crop production allows for more food to be sent to high risk countries at a faster rate. Finally, scientists can genetically modify plants to be resistant to infection, which also increases the production of usable crops. These advances in technology should not be ignored. Humanity has a tool to eradicate hunger, and choosing to not use GMOs would be inhumane.
In essence, the advantages of GMOs significantly outweigh any disadvantages. Because GMOs are highly sustainable, they solve potentially catastrophic happenings, specifically world hunger.
