After having to play many games away from their home field last season, the Kansas Jayhawks kicked off the 2025 season this past weekend in their new stadium, “David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium”.
Originally, the old stadium was dedicated to University of Kansas students who died in World War I, hence the name “Memorial Stadium”. The new stadium now honors David Booth, a KU alumni and donor who gifted 300 million dollars to build the stadium. He also donated nine million dollars for the Hall of Athletics in 2004, which is a facility that is now attached to the basketball stadium. Not only has he made huge impacts on the football side, he also purchased the original rules of basketball written by James Naismith for the school to display in the DeBruce Center.
The new football stadium has major improvements that will enhance the game day experience for fans. These improvements include: suites 80 feet closer to the field, chair back seating in the west and north seating areas, a video board that is two and a half times larger and 60 feet closer to the field, four times more food and beverage options, a 50% increase in area and leg room per seat, and all new seating that brings fans closer to seeing the action on the field.
It took approximately 33 months to build and finish the stadium, and it was open just in time for the season opener against Fresno State on August 23rd. More construction will continue to happen around the athletic facilities as the stadium is apart of a project that will include new year-round facilities and more space overall.
