Washburn Rural men’s varsity & JV golf team finished up this week with very solid performances, competing in 3 tournaments. The teams walked away with both confidence and momentum.
On Tuesday, the varsity squad teed off at the Firekeeper Open, at Prairie Band’s Firekeeper Golf Course. The Blues posted their best team score of the season so far, 306, finishing 5th place out of 11 teams. Junior, Michael Wilson led the way with a team best 74(+2), highlighted by clutch putting down the stretch. Senior, Xoaquin Overbey followed closely, showing major growth in approach shots and course management, firing a 76. Senior, Tagan Monasmith, and junior, Higgins Hawks both shot 77. Senior, Tadd Armstrong added a very solid 78, junior Peyton Goehring shot an 83, and senior Brady Goeden 84. A very good showing at one of the best and hardest courses in the midwest area.
On Wednesday, half of the JV team headed to Village Greens Golf Course, just outside of Meriden. The other half traveled to Stagg Hill Golf Club, in Manhattan. Both teams competed and played well. At Stagg, the JV squad took 2nd place. Junior, Lane Wittrock, and freshman, Grady Rodgers led the way, both shooting 86. The 2nd JV squad only could get in 9 holes due to weather. Junior, Sammy Brumley shot a 41, sophomore Cam Ismert also added a 42.
The Varsity squad will look to add another Topeka City Championship title to the trophy case, Monday at TCC. The JV will also compete at Lake Shawnee.
