Recently, on Saturday, March 1st, WRHS German instructor Kaylee Barber took 15 of her German students to a statewide conference located at Kansas University. This conference is called the Schülerkongress. This year’s theme was “Auf den Spuren der Zeit: Burgen und Schlösser weit und breit,” a celebration of the German castles and history. It’s the annual state German competition where a group of talented individuals perform and compete in a variety of events and activities for a chance to win medals and ribbons.
These events and activities include poetry, prose, a breakout room, a scavenger hunt, culture quizzes, posters, videos, and stickers, all revolving around German topics. In addition, students have the ability to make castle art, participate in a spelling bee, and play authentic German games. There are different events students can participate in to earn Kongresseuro (fake conference money) to buy German items like pens, hats, stickers, books, etc.
Zipora Morgan, a level 4 German student, placed 3rd in the Culture Quiz.
For the level 3 German students, Alex Jeffries got 3rd place in the Culture Quiz and was the Sticker Design Winner. Farrlynn Denny won the Sticker Design Honorable Mention, and Eli Replogle also placed 3rd in the Culture Quiz and won the Prose Distinguished Award.
