The ASL (American Sign Language) Club at Washburn Rural High School is a club where students can learn about the basic ASL fundamentals and explore the Deaf culture.
The club is an engaging environment where students can learn, practice, and improve their ASL skills through lessons and club activities. Mackenzie Kozlowiski is the president of the club and decided to do so as her personal experience of being mute as a child, has given her a passion for ASL and a vision to continue growing the club.
She took on the role of president after the previous leader graduated and wanted to continue the vision of the club.
She mentions how, “The people that come to ASL are passionate about why they joined and I love being able to help them explore that passion. It’s so rewarding to see them grow and hear how they were able to talk to their friends or family members who may be deaf; sometimes even to a stranger in the store who might be struggling to communicate. There’s hardly ever a dull day and it’s truly a place where we can laugh and learn with one another.”
The club is for anyone who has interest in learning ASL, and there is no experience or prior knowledge needed.
