TikTok is owned by Byte Dance, a Chinese company that increased in profits by 60 percent in less than one year. This is the fastest growing social platform today and has approximately 170 million users on the app, mostly being teenagers.
Recently, the House of Representatives gave Byte Dance two options, to sell the app or they would face a ban in the US. When users heard about this, they were not happy and mostly upset because there are businesses, memories, and people who get their income on this platform.
In an article by Andrew Chow, he explains, ¨New York Democrat Chuck Schumer indicated that working on the bill was a priority, and President Biden said he would sign the bill if it landed on his desk.¨
The bill slowed down in the Senate because Tik Tok users were speaking out about it. Then, at 10 p.m. on January 18, the ban was passed and users could not open the app without a message stating that the ban was passed. Not even 24 hours later, President Trump signed an executive order to freeze the ban so users could still use it.
This is not the end for the ban and it is still up for discussion but as of right now you can still use the app. TikTok remains off the app stores.
