September is Suicide Awareness month. Washburn Rural High School’s club Sources of Strength, participates in several suicide prevention activities throughout the month. During the week of September 9-13, Sources of Strength created a suicide prevention spirit week.
Students are encouraged to participate during the week to show school spirit and support. Different days have been given different themes, Monday’s theme was “comfortable in your own skin” (pajama day); Tuesday’s theme was “twin day” (match with someone); Wednesday’s theme was “sock about suicide” (wear crazy socks); Thursday’s theme is wear blue/purple for suicide awareness and Friday’s theme was “say aloha to good vibes” (hawaiian/vacation clothing).
During September advisory teachers awill be focussing on various activities to help students become more aware of the warning signs, as well as other suicide prevention information. In several areas in the building, posters are hung, displaying several important numbers including the suicide prevention hotline and the crisis lifeline number. They also display several resources to encourage people who need help to reach out.
