On Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024, The City of Topeka issued a boil water advisory due to the possibility of unsanitary water traveling to homes and businesses.
The city came to the conclusion that a pvc pipe in the chlorine gas system cracked because of the cold temperatures. Due to this, the levels of chlorine did not meet the city’s requirements, causing the advisory to be put into place.
Currently, the boil water advisory has been extended to Friday, Jan.19.
As of now, The City of Topeka has asked all residents to flush their water systems out by turning on faucets for 10-15 minutes to help ensure that fresh drinking water makes it to consumers.
All schools in USD 437, except the high school, middle school and Jay Schideler, have been affected by the advisory. It is important to note that the advisory could possibly be extended past Jan. 19, but until further notice, Topeka urges residents to continue boiling water for themselves and pets.
