On Sunday, Jan. 7, around 9 p.m., students and staff of the Auburn-Washburn school district who were watching WIBW were informed that all classes Monday, Jan. 8, would be canceled due to the severe weather that was predicted to hit Topeka.
Approximately 30 minutes later, WIBW made a report that there was a miscommunication between the district and the news station. However, on the WIBW website, the Auburn-Washburn school district was still reported as closed for Monday, Jan. 8.
Students, staff and parents were left confused, wondering what to believe. An hour later, at 10 p.m., the official Auburn-Washburn school district Facebook page posted an announcement confirming that classes would be in session Monday, Jan. 8.
With the upcoming week, and the chance of harsh weather, the district dffice sent out an email informing all students, staff. and families not to rely on the media for information, but to wait until an official announcement from the district regarding the cancellation of classes and other events was sent out.
