he Washburn Rural High School’s Orchestra program had their first concert of the year Tuesday, October 10. There are three WRHS orchestras: Concert Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and Symphony Orchestra. Chamber Orchestra is a zero hour group who works on a little bit more advanced pieces and is open to any grade with an audition. Symphony Orchestra is first hour and is the orchestra that any grade is welcomed into. The Concert Orchestra is the class that freshmen automatically get put into if they don’t audition for a higher level. These orchestras are directed by Courtney Nottingham. The concert will start at 7 p.m., Concert Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra playing first, and Chamber Orchestra being last.
The Chamber Orchestra played the songs Marriage of Figaro, Libertango, and Nimrod. The Symphony Orchestra played the songs Concerto in D, Introspection, and Iowa Spring. All classes were excited to perform this concert, as they have been putting work into it all semester so far.
Section leader of Chamber Orchestra, Megan Weis, was asked about this concert, “My favorite part of this concert was going from a piece not being able to be played fully by the orchestra to a fully completed piece.” She was also asked about her favorite song.
“I really like Marriage of Figaro.” Overall, Megan says that the thing she is looking forward to the most this school year is the solo/ensemble festival. This concert was very successful and a great way to show what the WRHS Orchestra can do.
