At WRHS, the library has an annual Washburn Rural High School Reading Challenge. This runs from the beginning of the school year to May 1, 2024. The goal of this challenge is to get students to read more independently and in their own free time. Students and staff will read and log books to compete to be a top reader at WRHS. There are posters around the school, in classrooms, and the library with a QR code to reach the google form for this challenge.
The google form asks basic questions first, like your name, grade, and English teacher. Then it goes into questions about the book you read. It asks for the title, author, and 1-2 sentence short summary of the book. This is a great way to get people reading and it also awards specific prizes to people based on how many books they submit by the end of the year.
There is also a Reading Extra Credit Project for English classes, even dual credit classes. To complete this project and gain the extra credit, all you have to do is read a book independently and do a project over it. This project can range from a simple book report to an illustrated poster. The WRHS library is really focusing on encouraging students to read on their own, because it can only broaden their knowledge. The library is a great place for students to feel comfortable doing their work and a quiet place to relax with a good book.
