Every Wednesday, WRHS has a shortened schedule. This day is reserved for staff PLC meetings. On a regular Wednesday, students do not attend their advisory class. Instead, they go straight to their 4th hour class.
Once a month, Wednesday is a “District Early Release” day. This means that students throughout the district are released earlier than a regular Wednesday. This year is different. Starting September 13, once a month, students will be released at 1:32 p.m. instead of the regular time, 3:02 p.m. This is dramatically different from last year’s district early release when students were released at 2:15 p.m.
On past Wednesdays, students who had after school activities such as sports and clubs, were directed to stay in the cafeteria until 3:02 before leaving for their event without a coach/teacher. This raises the question, where do they go now that they are released an hour and a half earlier?
Student athlete, Rylee Weber, her take on the issue.
What sports or after school activities are you involved in currently? Weber replied, “Tennis and soccer.”
How does getting released at 1:32 p.m. affect getting out to practice? Weber explains, “It’s kind of annoying because some leave school and have to come back anyways. I would rather get practice done.”
Do you plan on going home and driving back to the school an hour later? Weber said, “Yes”
Overall do you think getting out of school at 1:32 p.m. is beneficial or an issue to students and staff alike? Weber expresses, “I still think it’s beneficial because it gives athletes a break before practice.”
