On Thursday, September 7, Washburn Rural High School holds Club Day for 30 minutes, which takes the place of advisory. This is a day where students who are involved in clubs can go do some activities and socialize with others. A very popular club at WRHS is Sources of Strength, held in the library. This club focuses on mental health and suicide prevention with fun activities and spreading awareness.
In Sources of Strength many upcoming events were announced and explained. For example, the “chalk about suicide” which is an event where students write positive messages on the pavement so people can read it when walking in in the morning. The club activity was creating the Dum Dums with stickers that students involved in the club will also hand out in the morning.
Nolan Tremblay, Sources of Strength Homecoming Candidate and peer leader, was interviewed about his experience with Sources: “I joined at the start of my sophomore year because it looked like a good place to make new friends. I also wanted to be more involved in school activities and this club gave me a place to do that. My favorite memory is going to Kansas City for a round table with other Sources of Strength clubs from other schools.”
This is a very popular club and a safe space for people to become part of a community.
