For this week’s student spotlight we are focusing on our boys soccer team. We have asked Griffin Heinen some questions on how he think their year is going to go and how it is going so far.
- What are your thoughts on this year’s start of the season?
- “We have started off a little slower than we had hoped, but even saying that we have had fairly convincing wins without hitting our grove yet, it just shows how strong we can be as the season goes on.”
- List some of the team’s strengths and weaknesses.
- “We have a very strong senior class with this team, having 11 seniors on the varsity. So we have a lot of experience and we also are a very technically strong team as far as typical washburn teams go. However, we still need everyone to buy in and bring more energy, which was shown by our first game starting down 2 goals.”
- Who will be your biggest competitors this year?
- “ As far as competition goes, our biggest test will be at State, where we will play one of the best teams out of Kansas City. Outside of that, we are going to Quad City, Iowa, to play a nationally recognized tournament, which is always tough.”
- Who are your captains? How/why were they chosen?
- “Our captains this year are me, Devon Rutschmann and Benett Hallauer. We all got selected by last year’s captains, who chose not only the guys who have been around the most, but also the best leaders for this team, on and off the field.”
- What game are you most excited for this season?
- “State final. I was there my sophomore year, experiencing that environment was one of the most unique experiences of my life and especially the way we went out that year, all the emotion built up around that game. I want to get back there and hopefully have a different result this time around.”
