On Saturday, October 3, the Washburn Rural High School JV volleyball team traveled to Emporia to compete in a tournament with five other teams.

The volleyball team went 5-0, not dropping a set. The teams in this tournament were Manhattan, Newton, Maize, Seaman, Emporia, and Washburn Rural.

Sophomore Chloe Carlgren said the team played well.

“This weekend was definitely a big improvement for the team,” she said. “I do not think we would have won as many games as we did if we did not play together and we really worked together. It is obviously much different during a pandemic right now but we have made it through.”

Freshman Ava Bruno added, “This weekend we definitely played hard and worked really well as a team. We were always communicating with each other and we always believed in the team. We beat some pretty tough teams and came out of the tournament as a stronger and more unified team.”

The team finished the tournament playing Maize in the championship. They beat Maize and took home first place.
